Don Cherry is making no apologies for his controversial rant about new immigrants not wearing poppies. Cherry tells The Canadian Press he could have kept his job as co-host of ”Coach’s Corner” had he agreed to become — as he puts it — ”a tame robot who nobody would recognize.” Sportsnet has cut ties with the long-time hockey broadcaster, saying in a statement that following discussions with Cherry, it was decided it was the ”right time for him to immediately step down.” Cherry says he doesn’t have any immediate plans after his firing. But he says he’s been getting lots of phone calls and texts of support.
