Four people and a family pet are lucky to have escaped a fire in the Quinsam Heights Mobile Home Park Thursday morning. City of Campbell River fire chief Thomas Doherty notes the fire started in the kitchen, and there was no working smoke alarm in the dwelling. Everyone living in the home are receiving support from emergency social services. The heat from the fire damaged the neighbouring trailer, but firefighters were able to stop the fire in time to save that home. Of the 95 structure fires to date in 2019, more than 40 per cent were related to kitchen fires. Structure fires in Campbell River have increased 40 per cent over last year. Chief Doherty urges everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home.
