Fire officials in New South Wales say scorching hot, dry weather is rolling in from central Australia, worsening conditions for already exhausted firefighters.
Nearly 100 wildfires are burning in the hard-hit state and over 40 are not yet contained.
Ten people have died over the past few months of blazes and more than a thousand homes have been destroyed.
A total fire ban is in place in Sydney, Canberra (CAN’-brah) and other places to prevent new fires.
Sydney has gotten an exemption from the fire ban so the city’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks show can go ahead.
