B-C Hydro says a record for power usage was set amid a blast of extreme cold weather blanketing much of the province. It says consumers used 10,302 megawatts of power in a single hour yesterday — breaking the previous record for peak hourly demand set on January 3rd, 2017. The utility says the demand for electricity is expected to remain high with frigid temperatures and more snow expected over the coming days. Environment Canada says the deep freeze is likely to remain for at least one more day but more seasonal conditions — including rain on the south coast — are expected to arrive by the weekend.
