The Campbell River RCMP responded to a complaint from the daycare located at the Oyster River Elementary School on November 2nd, 2020, reporting extensive damage to the daycare following a Break and Enter at approximately 7:30 pm on November 1st. 2020.
The destruction in the daycare was extensive with the suspects breaking the fridge, TV, VCR, stereo, drizzling maple syrup around the room, throwing eggs from the fridge, and breaking a window to gain entry. Nothing was taken in the Break-In, indicating it was simply a willful act of destruction. Based on the history of similar types of cases that have been solved over the years, it is most likely that the offenders are youths. In this case, three youths on dirt bikes were witnessed in the school area at the time of the break-in.
Police are hoping that somebody in the area saw something,
said Cst Maury Tyre. Crimes like this, directed at small businesses are absolutely deplorable and the individual/individuals need to be held accountable before their behaviour escalates. It’s unfortunate, but it’s something we witness a lot. If people do small crimes without being stopped and held accountable, they progress to larger crimes much easier. Although we recognize it is the nature of parents to want to protect their young people from negative consequences in life, it’s also important for them to be accountable for wrongdoing. As most would agree, what we really want for our kids is that they grow up to be happy and good people. Letting young people get away with actions like this is not a step in the right direction. There are options available in many cases such as these that can deal with accountability without the courts. The Campbell River RCMP has an amazing Restorative Justice process available that allows the offender to make amends to the people they’ve wronged in the process of their actions and learn how crimes that they may have thought were victimless are anything but.
