Campbell River RCMP responded to a unit at 300 Robron at 9:40 pm on Thursday, November 26th, 2020 after a report came in of a male outside someone’s window brandishing a handgun.
The initial report indicated that loud bangs had been heard and the person with the gun went into a nearby unit after waving it around Gangster style.
Members of Campbell River’s A Watch, Police Dog Services, and Community Response Unit developed a containment around the home and directed people to exit the home. Multiple people in the home came down at different times, opened the door, then refused to comply with police directions, and closed the door again. Unfortunately, several people could not determine that they were required to follow police directions and police made entry into the home approximately an hour after the incident began. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident.
The firearm was recovered from an individual who exited the unit and it was determined to be a BB gun, however, it appeared to be very real.
There were at least 8 people in the residence at the time of the incident, the bulk of who were underaged individuals who seemed to have partaken heavily in alcohol and marijuana, with the levels of intoxication clearly adding to the dangerous nature of the situation.
Constable Maury Tyre who was on scene at the time explained as follows, When police are directing people, it is extremely important for them to follow instructions, that cannot be stressed enough. In this case, the professionalism and patience of the members at the scene ensured nobody was injured, but with the actions of the people in the residence at the time, it could have easily turned into a tragedy.
At the time of writing, police are still reviewing the incident to determine what further actions will be taken.
