A committee set up to look at reforming the Police Act is recommending B-C transition to a new provincial police service, rather than continuing with the R-C-M-P contract. The committee made up of M-L-As from all three parties says the change would address policing inconsistencies and improve accountability between B-C’s various police forces. Its 11 recommendations also include bringing in a new Policing Act with input from Indigenous Peoples and local governments. Committee chairman Doug Routley says the report outlines a new vision of policing rooted in decolonization, anti-racism, community and accountability.
