The Senate has given final passage to the Trudeau government’s bill to legalize recreational cannabis, as Canada becomes the first industrialized country in the world to make pot legal nationwide. Cannabis will be strictly regulated, with the objective of keeping it out of the hands of young people and displacing the thriving black market. However, Canadians will have to wait at least a few months to make any legal purchases. Bill C-45 still must get royal assent, which could come in days, but then the provincial and territorial governments will need eight to 12 weeks to get things in order.
