Avalanche Canada is urging backcountry users to be extra cautious over the next several days on the south coast and Vancouver Island. The non-profit organization says tests conducted following a recent fatal avalanche in the North Shore mountains near Vancouver found a weak layer in the snowpack that’s about 50 centimetres deep. It says a storm forecast for Friday could bring another 10 to 15 centimetres of snow and the remaining weak layer could trigger a deadly avalanche. The group says an avalanche warning will remain in effect until Sunday and is urging people going into the backcountry to carry essential rescue gear and know how to use it.
