Canada will soon have a law prohibiting almost all types of vessel abandonment and also preventing a boat owner from leaving a dilapidated vessel in one spot for more than 60 days without authorization. Those rules and more are contained in the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act, which received royal assent last week and will soon become law across the country. Boat owners who don’t comply will face fines of up to 50-thousand dollars for individuals and 250-thousand dollars for companies or corporations. Hundreds of vessels of all sizes litter Canadian shorelines and many have been identified along the B-C coast, posing, navigational, environment and safety risks.
