Voters in Nanaimo have been busy over the last eight months, casting ballots in the civic election, in a byelection to replace the M-L-A, and now today’s federal byelection. Seven candidates are running in the byelection and the leaders of five parties, including the Liberals, Conservatives, Greens and N-D-P have all popped into the riding during the campaign. David Black, a political communications expert at Victoria’s Royal Roads University, says voters in the riding don’t yet appear to be suffering fatigue, with substantial turnouts in the recent elections. He says the visits by party leaders indicates the importance of the vote this close to the October federal election, and that will likely boost voter turnout.
