Premier John Horgan says money laundering has distorted the provincial economy, infiltrated casinos, fuelled the overdose crisis and increased the price of real estate. The provincial government has decided to hold a public inquiry into the problem. B-C Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen’s final report is due by 2021 — although Horgan says the time is flexible. Cullen has been given broad powers because Attorney General David Eby says the province is “done with asking nicely” as it tries to identify and root out criminal cash.
