Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says it’s a good day for animals in Canada. The Vancouver Island M-P is celebrating that passage of a private member’s bill she sponsored that bans keeping whales and dolphins in captivity. The bill also bans the capture of wild cetaceans, but does allow for the rehabilitation and rescue of aquatic mammals. The Vancouver Aquarium is one of only two facilities in Canada that currently keeps captive cetaceans but has only one dolphin left after the city’s park board passed a bylaw amendment in 2017 banning cetaceans after two beluga whales died at the facility.
