Premier John Horgan says B-C’s legislation to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples amounts to a catalyst for change. He made the comments in the legislature as Bill 41 was introduced on Thursday. EcoJustice, the largest law charity in Canada, says it welcomes the bill because it provides a framework to meaningfully engage Indigenous Peoples in a process to decolonize existing laws and to respect and uphold Indigenous Rights. B-C Federation of Labour president Laird Cronk says Indigenous rights are human rights and the legislation lays a “just and equitable” path for economic development that benefits all B-C workers and communities.
