Health Minister Adrian Dix says he wants to see the evidence that it’s safe for Canada’s two largest airlines to drop their in-flight physical distancing policies in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Air Canada and WestJet say they’re ending seat distancing and will follow recommendations from the United Nation’s aviation agency and the International Air Transport Association.
Transport Canada says it issued guidance to the aviation industry, including recommendations for passenger spacing aboard planes, but it’s not mandatory.
Dix said yesterday he wants to know whether Transport Canada and Health Canada agree with the change and he’s looking for more than just a business case from the airlines.
