B-C is putting money on the table as it aims to solve a provincewide nursing shortage by helping internationally trained nurses get registered and licensed more quickly. The Health Ministry says about 15-hundred internationally educated nurses will each be offered up to 16-thousand dollars to pay for costs related to everything from English language tests to professional registration. The ministry says some nurses trained outside Canada can wait years before their credentials are assessed and they receive permission to practice. The 12-million-dollar initiative also creates a new group of so-called nurse navigators who will help interested foreign-trained nurses through the assessment and recruitment process.
