The R-C-M-P say they have notified the province’s independent police watchdog of the death of a man being held in jail in Courtenay. Police say the man was arrested early Saturday morning by officers responding to a report of an unknown person on a property. The Mounties say the man was believed to be intoxicated and was taken to R-C-M-P cells without incident but was later found unresponsive by a guard doing regular wellness checks. They say the man was taken to hospital where he died and the Independent Investigations Office will be investigating to determine whether police actions contributed to the man’s hospitalization.
