Post-tropical storm Fiona left behind a significant amount of damage in Atlantic Canada and parts of eastern Quebec, as well as at least two fatalities. P-E-I’s acting director of public safety told a news conference that one death on the island is being attributed to the storm — adding that preliminary findings suggest it involved “generator use.” On Sunday, police in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, confirmed the death of a 73-year-old woman who was swept out to sea. As the work week starts, most provincial government offices in Nova Scotia will remain closed Monday. The government says ongoing power outages resulting from post-tropical storm Fiona’s weekend of carnage is behind the decision. However, offices in Kings, Lunenburg, Annapolis, Queens, Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties will remain open. Public schools in the harder hit portions of the province, mainly northern Nova Scotia and the Halifax area, will also be closed.
