The Trudeau government is poised to partially unveil its long-awaited plans for the military personnel and equipment it intends to offer the United Nations for peacekeeping efforts. The Liberal government promised a year ago to contribute up to 600 Canadian troops and 150 police officers, but those plans appear to have changed and now will involve several smaller contributions rather than a single specific mission. Atul Khare, the U-N’s undersecretary general for field support, says this grab bag approach to aid is actually preferable when it comes to developed countries because many missions are short on the high-end equipment and personnel Canada can offer. Trudeau is expected to speak at the opening plenary of the U-N peacekeeping conference in Vancouver.
