The province says it is putting up 50 million dollars to begin hiring new teachers as part of an agreement with the B-C Teachers’ Federation. The money will go towards immediately hiring about 11-hundred teachers, a move prompted by a Supreme Court of Canada ruling in favour of the teachers’ union. The Supreme Court ruled in November that a 2002 law imposed by the province that blocked teachers’ ability from bargaining class sizes was unconstitutional. Union president Glen Hansman says the 50 million dollars in funding is just the first step, saying it will take a lot more to undo the damage the government has done to a generation of students.
