Premier Christy Clark says the Donald Trump administration is showing more of an appetite to negotiate a new softwood lumber agreement than the previous U-S government of Barack Obama. Clark held a special cabinet meeting today aimed at hammering out a strategy to secure an agreement to replace the deal that expired a year ago. After the meeting, she said she feels confident about Canada’s chances of working out a new deal with the United States despite what she said was the “unpredictable change” of the new administration. She says the Obama government barely responded to Canadian overtures about a new lumber deal because it was focused on reaching a Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which Trump scrapped after taking office.
