Vancouver’s aquarium has announced plans to expand it’s beluga program, but one critic says the vulnerable species could be better served if the facility put the resources toward another cause. C-E-O John Nightingale says the marine science centre has an obligation to continue its conservation work, and that the facility is the only place in Canada where some types of beluga research can be done. But Vancouver Humane Society spokesman Peter Fricker says it would be better to use the resources to fund conservation programs and field research. Aquarium officials say they will bring back three to five belugas that the facility currently has out on loan following the mysterious deaths of two whales last fall.
