An emergency resolution aimed at solving a long-standing derelict boat problem passed unanimously at a weekend meeting of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities. The resolution, drafted by Nanaimo-Ladysmith New Democrat M-P Sheila Malcolmsen, designates the Canadian Coast Guard as the agency responsible for directing the removal and recycling of abandoned vessels. Malcolmsen says she hopes it will also spur the creation of a comprehensive national strategy to prevent the unwanted vessels from becoming a serious environmental and navigational hazard. Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says abandoned vessels are having a significant impact on natural ecosystems and emergency response services, and hopes the federal government will act swiftly.
