New Democrat Leader John Horgan is hoping to gain the votes of tenants with a promised rental rebate of up to 400 dollars a year per unit. Horgan is also promising to close loopholes that let landlords jack up rents, including fixed-term leases and rent increases based on neighbourhood prices. He says if the N-D-P wins the May 9th election, it will also address the problem of “renovictions,” where landlords use renovations as an excuse to evict tenants and sidestep restrictions around rent increases. Horgan says the B-C Liberals have been ignoring renters for 16 years despite a lack of affordable rental accommodations, especially in the Lower Mainland.
