Ottawa is promising an infusion of cash for the Canadian Coast Guard and federal Fisheries Department, but some experts question whether the new funding will be enough. The new money — included in the federal fiscal update released yesterday — works out to more than 1.2 billion dollars over the next six years. The funds are earmarked for maintenance, navigational aids and communications equipment on the Coast Guard’s aging ships, as well as for other needs, such as monitoring fish stocks. University of Calgary professor Rob Huebert says the promised new cash works out to 200 million dollars a year, which he says is just a fraction of what is really needed.
