Animal welfare advocates are welcoming the Vancouver aquarium’s announcement that it will no longer keep whales, dolphins and porpoises at the facility. The aquarium said today that it’s ending the display of cetaceans following a long and controversial battle with animal activists and the city’s park board. Peter Fricker of the Vancouver Humane Society called it a major victory for animal welfare, saying the idea of keeping animals in captivity has lost public support. Camille Labchuk with Animal Justice said in a statement that the aquarium’s move shows the writing is on the wall for the whale and dolphin captivity industry.
